Electric
Electrical Service is provided by Pocahontas Municipal Utilities. The City purchases wholesale power through contracts with the Western Area Power Administration and Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative. The municipal electric utility has served the city since 1912. Through planning and sound management the city is able to offer a lower rate structure while ensuring a reliable power supply. In 1989 Pocahontas Municipal Utilities borrowed $600,000 to upgrade the entire electrical system. As part of the upgrade the entire electrical system was placed underground, increasing the system's reliability in the case of severe weather. Pocahontas Municipal Utilities paid of the $600,000 bond issue in 1996, two years early. The City recently completed a $1,100,000 generation project. The project includes two 1,825 kw diesel generators. The generators will be used to provide power to the community in emergencies and for peak shaving. The Electric Supt. oversees the day-to-day operations of the department under the direction of the City Administrator.
