The Miss Pocahontas statue on Highway 3 on the east edge of Pocahontas has attracted many visitors and photographers since it was erected in 1956. Visitors from all the states and many countries of the world have signed the guest books in the teepee. The statue is named for the Indian Princess Pocahontas and has become a widely known landmark. The statue was the brain child of the late Frank W. Shaw, Pocahontas attorney, and his father, A.J. Shaw, about eight years before it became a reality. It was constructed by Marcell Moritz after a design by W.C. Ballard of Nevis, MN. It measures 25 feet from the base of the platform to the top of the head. Built of steel, wood, and cement, it measures seven and one-half feet across the skirt and shoulders. Click the arrow to return to the Pocahontas, Iowa Page
