City and Evertek partner to offer High Speed Internet Service

Pocahontas residents are now able to enjoy a high speed wireless internet service.  The City has partnered with Evertek of Everly, Iowa to offer residential and business high speed wireless internet service. The service will offer download speeds of up to 512k, which is 10 times faster than normal dial up service. The service includes 10 mb of web page space as well as 7 email accounts.

Residential and business service will be $29.95 per month. Subscribers will have the monthly charges included on their monthly city utility bill. Customers will be able to write one check for their utilities and internet service, offering additional convenience.   Installation fees will be $39.95 for a standard installation. Installation fees for special or difficult installations may be higher.

“The Mayor and City Council wanted Pocahontas residents and businesses to have access to a affordable, high speed internet service,” said City Administrator Greg Fritz. “As the economy becomes more and more dependent on technology, high speed internet access is critical. We viewed a similar system operated by the City of Traer, Iowa that has been in operation since February. After reviewing proposals from different internet providers the Council chose to partner with Evertek .”

There were several reasons the City Council selected Evertek. Evertek has 13 years of experience operating wireless communications systems. One of their towers is located near Palmer and is used for high speed internet and wireless television services. Evertek has a technician who lives in rural Pocahontas and a relationship with Eberle Data Systems in Pocahontas for sales and customer support. Evertek is experienced in operating this type of system, as they operate an identical system in Hartley, Iowa. In addition, the proposal from Evertek was nearly 50% less per month in price.

Under the terms of the partnership Evertek will provide the connection to the internet backbone, installation, equipment for the customers homes, and customer service. The City will provide the equipment for the base stations and billing services.

“We are looking forward to our partnership with Evertek,” said Fritz. “Evertek is joining the Chamber of Commerce and plans to increase their visibility in the community by supporting community events.”

The City also plans to use the equipment for remote monitoring of its lift stations, water treatment plant, and electric system. The system may also be utilized for meter reading, service connection/disconnec-tion and other utility services.
Please contact Pocahontas City Hall at 335-4841 if you have any questions or if you are interested in subscribing to the service. Residents can also contact Evertek at 1-800-242-0154.
